In the beginning… God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

(Genesis 1. 25-26 New Living Translation)

Dear Diary, have you ever thought about the fact that God saw the need to create both animals and humans? I know most people in the world today believe Charles Darwin and his theory of natural selection, but I struggle to understand why thinking we used to be monkeys is a preferable thought path to the idea that God made us in His own image. Of course, that may be a topic for another day’s entry. I do have to admit though that humans and animals have an undeniable connection. From little girls and newborn puppies, to therapy dogs (and horses) in hospitals and prisons, to indigenous peoples’ reliance on animals for both food and guidance, animals connect with each human on this planet whether we realize the connection or not. This connection dates back to the dawn of creation, when Adam and Eve, as the first humans, first met the animals they were tasked with caring for.

The human-animal connection is a beautiful, confusing phenomenon of this world, and one I still struggle to understand. Humans rely on domestic animals such as dogs, cats, and guinea pigs for companionship, while at the same time relying on cows, pigs, and chickens for food. Sheep and goats are used for clothing, though without needing the same kind of dedication as the other stock animals. Horses used to be vital for human transportation and even vital for the work of diverse trades. Now, horses ride behind the human vehicle of transportation, instead of pulling it.

Animals also rely on humans for their existence, as is demonstrated in the Garden of Eden when God gave dominion over the world (including the animals) to the newly created humans. Obviously, companion animals rely on humans for food, safety, and medical interventions. However, even wild animals depend on humans’ behavior. If humans behave in a certain manner that hinders the wild creatures’ food supply or natural habitat, then only humans can repair the damage done. Certain wild species even rely on human intervention for safety and health among their numbers. Humans can assist with over-and-under population problems as well as mass sickness outbreaks. Clearly, dear diary, it is undeniable that humans and animals depend on one another to exist and flourish. What magnificent thoughts to think about today, I shall write again another day. - Kylee

Kylee's Note - Project #3 Blended Essay

Genre - Diary

This is the first part of my Blended Essay, meaning an essay that combines multiple genres to convey one message. My original essay included two diary entries, a review of literature, and a closing reflection. The diary entries give this topic a personal feel by drawing the readers into the young woman's story. Here, elusive thoughts and rabbit trails are floating around her head as she tries to fathom one of the most beautiful mysteries of Creation.
